Cooking for Two
I was cooking your favourite dinner Turkey, and gravy, and rice When I knew you would be back soon Oh that was always so nice Waiting for that love Waiting for that smile When I knew above It wouldn't be a while Your arrival was always on time Never a minute late When you left from work, and came on back, You were always here around eight Waiting for that love Waiting for that smile When I knew above It wouldn't be a while The turkey was gold while the gravy was hot Smells surrounded the air I was waiting for that smile I sat there waiting, in my chair Waiting for that love Waiting for that smile When I knew above It wouldn't be a while The doorbell rang My heart leaps although drops, For when I opened it, there was a tall man A cop Waiting for that love Waiting for that smile When I knew above It now would be a while. -Sophia Ratevosian Analysis In the poem "Cooking for Two", there are examples of figurative language such as "Smell surrounding" which is alliteration. The use of personification is found in this poem such as, "My heart leaps although drops". The theme of this poem was attachment because the person in the poem expresses affection for the one she loves. Gone Gold
The winter moon had tipped and spilled Its shadows on the lawn When Farmer Owen woke to find His only daughter gone; She'd taken all the clothes she had Against the biting cold, And in a note to him she wrote, "I've taken all your gold." -Author unknown. Analysis In the poem "Gone Gold", there are examples of figurative language such as, "I've taken all your gold" which is considered symbolism since the word "gold" is being used to refer to this mans prized possessions including his own daughter. The poem also includes alliteration since the tittle is "Gone Gold". This poem is a ballad therefore it includes poetic devices such as a rhyme scheme of ABCB. The first and third line is written in iambic tetrameter and the second and fourth line is written in iambic trimeter. The theme of this poem is the unexpected and the message of this is that we must expect the unexpected because we never know what life will do to us. |
